Other Modes of Transport

Courier Services

A courier is a person or a company employed to deliver messages, packages, and mail. Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, specialization and individualization of services. Couriers are usually more expensive than usual mail services, and their use is typically restricted to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost.

Different courier services operate on all scales, from within specific towns or cities, to regional, national and global services. The world's largest courier companies are Velox Express, DHL, FedEx, TNT N.V., UPS. They offer services worldwide.

In cities, there are often bicycle couriers or motorcycle couriers.

Cable transport is a broad mode where vehicles are pulled by cables instead of an internal power source. It is most commonly used at steep gradient. Typical solutions include aerial tramway, elevators, escalator and ski lifts; some of these are also categorized as conveyor transport.

Spaceflight is transport out of Earth's atmosphere into outer space by means of a spacecraft. While large amounts of research have gone into technology, it is rarely used except to put satellites into orbit, and conduct scientific experiments. However, man has landed on the moon, and probes have been sent to all the planets of the Solar System.
